Position Summary:
The Site Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and enforcing safety programs for roofing and glazing operations on commercial construction sites. This role ensures compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations while minimizing risk associated with fall hazards, material handling, glass installation, and elevated work.
The Safety Manager promotes a proactive safety culture to protect employees, subcontractors, and the public.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety Program Implementation
- Develop and enforce site-specific safety plans for roofing and glazing operations.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA standards, fall protection requirements, and company safety policies.
- Conduct job hazard analyses (JHAs) for roofing tear-offs, membrane installation, curtainwall systems, storefront installation, and glazing activities.
Fall Protection & Elevated Work Safety
- Monitor and enforce fall protection systems including guardrails, warning lines, safety monitors, and personal fall arrest systems.
- Inspect anchors, lifelines, harnesses, and tie-off points.
- Ensure safe practices for work on steep slopes, low-slope roofs, and leading-edge work.
Glass Handling & Installation Safety
- Oversee safe handling, transport, and installation of glass panels and curtainwall systems.
- Ensure proper use of glazing suction equipment, cranes, glass manipulators, and rigging.
- Enforce procedures to prevent glass breakage, falling materials, and worker exposure to sharp edges.
Material Handling & Equipment Safety
- Monitor crane picks, hoisting operations, and rooftop material loading.
- Ensure safe use of forklifts, telehandlers, swing stages, scaffolding, and aerial lifts.
- Verify rigging and lifting practices meet safety standards.
Site Inspections & Hazard Prevention
- Conduct daily site walks focusing on fall hazards, roof openings, skylights, leading edges, and overhead risks.
- Identify unsafe behaviors and conditions; implement immediate corrective actions.
- Ensure proper protection of roof penetrations and skylight openings.
Training & Workforce Safety
- Conduct safety orientations for field crews and subcontractors.
- Lead toolbox talks specific to roofing and glass installation hazards.
- Train employees on fall protection, ladder safety, rigging awareness, silica exposure, and PPE usage.
Incident Investigation & Reporting
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and property damage events.
- Document findings and implement corrective actions.
- Track trends and recommend preventive measures.
Regulatory Compliance & Documentation
- Maintain OSHA logs, fall protection plans, and safety documentation.
- Ensure compliance with silica, heat stress, ladder safety, and personal protective equipment requirements.
- Prepare for safety audits and regulatory inspections.
Coordination & Communication
- Work closely with superintendents, project managers, and general contractors to coordinate safe sequencing of work.
- Participate in pre-installation meetings to identify safety risks.
- Serve as the site safety liaison for clients and inspectors.
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of construction safety experience required.
- Experience in roofing, waterproofing, curtainwall, storefront, or architectural glass installationstrongly preferred.
- Commercial construction experience required.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Project) and project management software (e.g., Procore, Bluebeam).
Preferred Qualifications:
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction (required)
- OSHA 500 Trainer (preferred)
- Board of Certified Safety Professionals credentials such as CHST, ASP, or CSP (preferred)
- Competent Person Fall Protection Training
- Aerial Lift & Forklift Certification
- First Aid/CPR/AED.
