The Role
Have you spent years guiding complex design programmes from concept through approval? Are you ready to shape educational environments that will serve students and communities for decades to come? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you.

We are seeking an experienced Senior Design Manager to lead design activities across major K-12 education programmes in Los Angeles. This is a senior, visible role where your decisions genuinely matter.

As Senior Design Manager, you will lead and coordinate the design process for school upgrade and critical repair projects. You will act as the lead design professional, setting clear direction, ensuring quality, and maintaining strong links with regulators and internal teams.

This role offers scope, authority and the chance to influence how large public sector projects are designed and delivered, from the earliest ideas through to handover.

If you want your next role to combine leadership, influence and long-term impact, apply now and help design spaces where future generations will learn and thrive.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organise and direct all design activities for assigned programmes.
  • Act as the main design lead, including liaison with the Division of the State Architect.
  • Manage multiple projects from concept through approval and transition to delivery.
  • Ensure designs meet functional, budgetary, legal and environmental requirements.
  • Oversee compliance with district standards and educational needs.
  • Guide architects and consultants on goals, standards, schedules and budgets.
  • Run an efficient design review process to ensure value and quality.
  • Review design changes to keep projects on track financially.
  • Recommend architectural firm appointments from approved lists.
  • Support community engagement activities linked to design work.
  • Coordinate with environmental health, safety, maintenance and occupancy teams.
  • Maintain clear documentation that meets legal and audit requirements.
