The Role

Are you an experienced financial leader with a strong grasp of nonprofit accounting? Ready to make a meaningful impact by guiding an organization’s financial strategy?

Nevada Legal Services (NLS) is seeking a Chief Financial Officer to lead all financial operations across our statewide organization. This role is pivotal in supporting our mission to provide free legal help to low-income Nevadans. You’ll be a trusted advisor to the Executive Director and the Board, shaping the financial direction of NLS while ensuring fiscal responsibility and compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage annual budgets and financial forecasts
  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and all relevant federal and state regulations
  • Oversee internal audits, payroll, banking, and investments
  • Support fundraising and grant reporting with clear financial planning
  • Supervise finance staff including Assistant Comptroller and Accounts Payable
  • Maintain and improve financial systems, insurance coverage, and benefit plans
  • Train staff on financial procedures, including trust and litigation accounts

NLS receives the Legal Services Corporation funding for the state of Nevada. We represent qualified individuals in subsidized housing applications, terminations, and eviction, unemployment insurance benefits, Social Security disability appeals, welfare benefits, tax controversies, and limited immigration and family law.

Qualifications:  

  • Degree in business administration, accounting or a related field or 6-10 years of work experience with comparable responsibilities.  
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and practices, as well as an in-depth knowledge of nonprofit accounting, budgeting, and financial planning.
  • Familiar with appropriate accounting and financial software.  
  • Comfortable making professional presentations to the Board of Directors, outside agencies, and program staff.  
  • Able to attend meetings and/or other functions at various locations throughout the service area. Occasional out-of-area travel and overnight stays may be required.  
  • Familiarity with legal services, nonprofit, or grant-funded organizations.
