The Role

We are looking for a Research and Innovation Manager to help shape the future of water treatment and sustainability.

You will lead efforts to design and improve technologies and processes across our advanced water recycling facility. You’ll oversee research projects, work closely with industry partners and recommend improvements to help us operate more efficiently and responsibly.

This is a hands-on, forward-looking role that combines strategic thinking with technical insight. You

will play a key part in aligning our innovation work with UOSA’s broader vision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development, evaluation, and implementation of new technologies, processes, and strategies to improve wastewater treatment, resource recovery, and sustainability.
  • Oversee research projects, process development initiatives.
  • Collaborate with industry partners.
  • Recommend innovation to enhance efficiency, compliance, and environmental performance in wastewater management.

The Person

  • PHD in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field from an accredited four-year college or university required.
  • 3-5 years of progressive experience; including experience with water and wastewater resource management.
  • Must be able to develop and execute a research and innovation roadmap aligned with the utility’s strategic goals.
  • Experience working in a municipal or industrial environment is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate innovative solutions.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Must be able to handle the physical requirements of the position, including extensive walking, bending, stooping, climbing stairs and ladders, and lifting/carrying up to 30 pounds.
  • Possession of a vehicle operator's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.
